Preparing for a training course with us
Returns on Investment
Many people are put forward or put themselves forward for a course without understanding or demonstrating upfront what is required to actually benefit from it.
The arguments often given by management for declining a training course is that the rewards will not be paid back for the investments made.
Or that budget remains a problem. Look for ways to show you can save money – fore xample booking a course in advance, or even a set of courses over a period of time, booking flights in advance when they are cheaper.
Specifically – they may ask for proof of how you will implement what you will learn.
And for once - they are actually right. Everyone needs to justify the reasons for attending a course and ensure the analyst(s) will benefit.
Our courses are all class-room based: you learn the techniques and approaches with us, then you get in the driving seat and drive – back in your own lab, using your own system.
3- Step Learning
There are three stages to coming on a course with us:
Step 1 preparation
Step 2 teaching
Step 3 putting it all into practice on your own and known samples
Doing only one or two parts will not provide you with the gains you seek.
In fact you will forget a lot of what you learnt and found interesting – as the human brain is limited in what it can recall and apply.
Likewise, revising our course manual will be helpful, but will not impact you if you don't put into practice what you´ve learned quickly.
Top tip: help increase your chances to come on a course by creating a training plan for yourself to present to management, using all the tips given here, integrating your own specific reasons for attending.
Top tip: prior to coming on the course, book some sessions every week on your instrument for when you get back in the lab.
Use some existing or new samples to try and improve your analysis from what you learned on the course.
Top tip: never think or say to anyone you will instantly "know it" once you have been on a training course – it will take many weeks and up to several months perfecting your analysis before the full benefits can be seen in your lab results.
Pre-announcing this could jeapordise your chances at being seen to gain from a course if you raise management expectations – then fail to deliver on the expectations, within the tight timeframes you have given yourself!
Top tip: Show how you will expect to benefit form attending a course for your level using the details given in what can I expect to gain for my level.
